Why I am not Worried About the Current State of Yoga

There seems to be some concern being expressed in the “Yoga Media” about the current state of Yoga in the West. I have read several articles of late questioning whether the asana oriented practice we do is really Yoga. Most of these articles use Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga as a typical example of this and of what is wrong with Yoga in the West. Having practiced Ashtanga for 19 years and taught it full time for 13, I thought I would offer some opinions.

I was fortunate enough to travel to Mysore 6 times and to do 3 of Sri K Pattabhi Jois international workshops. In all that time Guruji never left me in any doubt that the practice was not just about asana. He always emphasised that asana was only one limb of Ashtanga and a tool I needed to practice and master to realise the other 7 limbs. He stressed the need to practice Yama and Niyama, but said that this was very, very difficult and that the discipline, courage and strength of mind developed in the asana practice is essential to achieve this. In my experience you cannot stay in the Ashtanga Vinyasa practice for the extended period of time required to fully benefit from it, without losing any obsession with asana you may have. Just as Guruji said, the more I have practiced the more my understanding of the whole of what yoga is has developed. Also as Guruji said, this process has been organic, and inevitable. I also believe that in the right environment with the right teacher, an obsession with asana is a very normal and beneficial thing to have. It is almost everyone’s starting point. The job of a teacher is to temper that enthusiasm and lead each student, in their own time, to a deeper understanding of what yoga really is.

Many of my students come to my classes to practice asana because it is good for their bodies and makes them feel good. That is all they want from the practice, and that is fine by me. Some of my students are interested in more than that, and for some a deeper interest develops over time. It is my privilege to offer a path to these students that was given to me by Guruji, and that continues to work for me.

So, why am I not worried about an asana obsession in the West? Firstly, where are all these yoga teachers who teach that asana and body beautiful is all it is about? I have yet to meet a yoga teacher who does not understand on some level that there is more to Yoga than asana. Secondly, there are more people doing some sort of yoga based practice now than there has ever been. Ever. In these modern times with these numbers practicing there will be some who go deeper and further and it is these few that will keep the Yoga tradition alive and carry it into the future. That can only be a good thing. Meantime, in my experience you cannot practice asana for an extended period of time without a deeper understanding of Yoga developing. Whatever your initial motivation. Like Guruji always said, “practice, practice, practice, and all is coming.”

Simple New Years Message

Remember that your first practice of the New Year does not set the tone for the rest of the year, just as your first Suryanamaskar does not set the tone for the rest of your practice.

Welcome to the New Year at Te Aro Astanga Yoga.

We hope that you have all had a great start to 2011 and are ready to get back into regular yoga practice. Victoria, Holly, Isla and I have certainly had a good break with 12 warm days at Ohope Beach. We swam every day, ate lots of ice cream, berries, watermelon and sweetcorn, and cycled a bit and played beach cricket a bit. In other words we enjoyed a typical New Zealand summer holiday. I am now looking forward to getting back into the yoga school.

We are open as of Monday 17th January. Please note a few points:
  • Wellington Anniversary Weekend: There will be no classes on Sun. 23rd or Mon. 24th Jan. Our first Sunday Led class will be on Sun. 30th Jan. at 10am.
  • Wednesday Evening Open class 4.30 — 7pm: Late last year I adjusted the time for this class so that I could start the Intro course at 6.30pm. I have decided to move that time back to 7pm. The Wed. Open class will now be from 4.30 to 7pm, with the Intro course following directly after.
  • Wash Your Yoga Mats: I have taken all the mats out of the rack to give you all the opportunity to take your mat home and give it a wash. We usually wash ours in the bath, but have also washed them in the washing machine on a gentle cycle and slow spin. It normally takes at least 3 days for the mat to dry.
  • Lost Property: We still have quite a bit of lost property left from last year. I have put the basket in the foyer, so please take the time to have a look through it and see if you recognise anything. We also have some jewellery on the reception desk at the back of the room, so have a look there as well. Anything unclaimed by the end of Jan. will go to a good home.

Thanks everyone and see you on the mat soon.

Build a Foundation

The best attitude to take to your yogasana practice is that you are building a foundation. You want this to be a life times practice, so time is on your side. Build slowly and carefully always aware that you are building something that you want to endure.

Your asana practice is about creating a foundation so that the whole of  Yoga can flow freely into you. This foundation will take more than just one lifetime to complete. Accept this fact. Practice without expectation and with discipline and patience and “all is coming”. Practice with expectations and a sense of wanting to get somewhere, or with a teacher who has this attitude and you will inevitably get ahead of yourself. This leads to many difficulties and disappointment.

What is true for your practice as a whole, is also true for each asana. Start each asana by establishing a steady and strong foundation. Have no expectations for each asana. The only thing certain about every asana is that it will not be the same as the last time you did it. From your steady base, soften into each asana with the breath and enjoy.
